The MOTRACO Shareholders General Meeting (SGM) was held on 09 May 2025. The meeting focused on the following key matters:
- Presentation of the report of the Board of Directors.
- Deliberate and approve the Annual Financial Statements for the year ended 31 December 2024.
- Deliberate and approve the application of financial results of year 2024.c
- Approval of the 2025 budget.
- Status of Key projects.
- Rotation of committees chairmanship.
- Other matters of interest to the society.
Adérito Sousa, General Manager of MOTRACO – Mozambique Transmission Company – a joint venture between equally owned EDM (Mozambique), EEC (Eswatini and Eskom (South Africa), operating since 2000, summarized the deliberations and recommendations as follows:
Key highlights and Challenges for MOTRACO throughout 2024:
- Highlights:
- Declared dividends to shareholders for the 15thconsecutive year;
- MOTRACO ranked highly in the Mozambique top 100 companies survey conducted by KPMG;
- Replacement of Insulators on the Arnot-Maputo 400kV Line completed;
- Significantly lower number of incidents when compared to previous years;
- All reported technical incidents resolved timeously;
- Continued focus and increased allocation of business to local services providers;
- High customer satisfaction.
- Challenges:
- Community encroachment on servitudes and vandalization of infrastructure;
- Ageing Infrastructure increasing the risk of system failures;
- Adverse weather conditions causing soil erosion and resultant compromise the integrity of the network;
- Need to increase the availability of skilled resources to respond timeously to network emergencies on the Mozambique and Eswatini networks;
- Financial performance:
- The SGM approved the 2024 annual accounts, clean and without qualifications.
- 2025 Budget:
The shareholder reviewed and approved the proposed 2025 budget, including the operational & capital budget, as well as the training allocations which will cover both MOTRACO’s and shareholders capacity building particularly requirements with regards to transmission operation and planning.
- Succesuful Projects implementation:
In view of ensuring continuous reliability and continuity of supply to its customers some capital projects have been implemented and concluded, particularly: (i) The Reinsulation of Arnot-Maputo 400 kV line, (ii) Installation of a 132 kV busbar bypass at Maputo, (iii) Repair of Oil leaks on transformer 3 and (iv) Commissioning of a new 500 MVA 400/132 KV transformer at Maputo, amongst others.
Going forward , the company shall pursue with implementation of new projects aiming at further improving operational performance and reducing supply risks, including: (i) the repair of transformer 1, (ii) Reinsulation of Camden-Edwaleni 400kV line (iii) Upgrading of Telecom Equipment, (iv) Protection of Towers against Encroachment & Erosion and (v) Replacement of Control & Protection of Maputo Series Cap Bank.
- Corporate Social Responsibility Investment (CSRI):
Throughout the year MOTRACO supported various initiatives and social projects in all three countries traversed by its 400 kV transmission infrastructure – South Africa, Eswatini and Mozambique – with particular emphasis to the areas in the vicinity of its lines and substations.
- Rotation of chairmanship:
A rotation and new chairmanship for the SGM, Fiscal Committee and Board of Director has been approved effective immediately.
- A word of appreciation from SGM:
The SGM commended the Board of Directors, the General Manager and staff for their exceptional dedication and reiterated their support and satisfaction with the results achieved and recommended the BOD/management particularly to continue giving attention and support to the communities leaving in the vicinity and encroaching the line servitudes, through implementation a positive engagement and corporative social responsibility projects. Going forward, MOTRACO’s infrastructure shall continue playing a vital role for all three countries traversed and to be a critical infrastructure in a broader Southern Africa Power Pool (SAPP) context and developments.
