Motraco History

August 1992 the SADC Treaty is signed;

October 1992 Peace is achieved in Mozambique and democratic elections are held in the same year;

August 1995 SADC members sign the Inter-Governmental Memorandum (IGMOU) resulting in the establishment of the Shouthern African Power Poll (SAPP);

March 1997

Government of Mozambique and Alusaf sign a Statement of Understanding for the establishment of an aluminium factory in Mozambique;

June 1997

An electricity tariff for Mozal has been agreed. However, the energy supply to Mozal could not be carried out by Eskom (legislative problems) or EDM (insufficient capacity). A company with special purposes had to be created to solve this problem.

March 1998

the Government of Mozambique approved the MOTRACO project with some tax benefits;

October 1998

MOTRACO is incorporated with three shareholders EDM, Eskom and ECE, each maintaining the same share in Joint Venture.
