Motraco's history

August 1992 The SADC treaty is signed;

October 1992 Peace is achieved in Mozambique and democratic elections are held that same year;

August 1995 SADC members sign the Inter_Governmental Memorandum (IGMOU) resulting in the establishment of the Shouthern African Power Poll (SAPP);

March 1997

The Mozambican government and Alusaf sign a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of an aluminum plant in Mozambique;

June 1997

An electricity tariff for Mozal was agreed. However, power supply to Mozal could not be provided by Eskom (legislation problems) or EDM (insufficient capacity). A special purpose company had to be set up to solve this problem.

March 1998

the Mozambican government approved the MOTRACO project with some tax benefits;

October 1998

MOTRACO is incorporated with three shareholders EDM, Eskom and EEC, each keeping the same share in the Joint Venture.
