Maputo:MOTRACO –Mozambique Transmission Company– announced the continuation of its projects for the rehabilitation and strengthening of the electricity transmission system to 400 kV, in the framework of its strategy for the modernisation and optimization of strategic assets ensuring regional interconnection.
Following the completion in 2025 of the insulator replacement project on the Arnot line (Republic of South Africa) – Maputo, the company will start the physical execution of replacing a total of 2,301 new insulators, including their accessories, in the second line to 400 kV.
The project will cover the section between the Camden Substation in South Africa and the Edwaleni Substation in the Kingdom of Eswatini, extending from this section to the Mozambique border in the Goba area.

Work on the ground will be carried out on an energised line (live line) by applying specialized techniques and using air means that allow the execution of interventions without interruption of the service, with the start of the assembly phase scheduled for mid-April 2026, with an estimated overall duration of 10 to 12 months.
The company stresses that during the execution of the works the continuity and stability of the electrical supply will be ensured to the southern region of Mozambique and the Kingdom of Eswatini, resulting from the redundant system, consisting of two high voltage lines at 400 kV.
Additional projects:At the same time, MOTRACO will continue with the implementation of transformer repair projects, the modernisation of control systems, the release of loads and measurement, the installation of anti-vandalization mechanisms, as well as monitoring and mitigation of erosion in the vicinity of high-voltage towers.
These investments, in the order of USD 15 million over the next two years, aim to extend the service life of the international electric transmission system, enhancing its reliability, stability, efficiency and security of supply, in line with the company's continued commitment to operational excellence and sustainability.
MOTRACO is a regional and independent joint venture, established in 1998 and in operation since 2000, specialising in the transport of high-voltage electricity for further distribution and retail sale by national electricity companies, namely Mozambique Electricity (EDM) and Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC), as well as data transmission via a fiber optic cable installed on one of the power lines for operational purposes and availability to various operators.
The infrastructure is operated by the company and establishes the link between the electrical systems of Mozambique, Eswatini and South Africa, integrating them into the regional network of Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), facilitating the import and export of electricity and contributing to the materialisation of the strategic objective of positioning Mozambique as a regional energy hub at SADC level.
From 2027/28, the infrastructure implemented will ensure the reception of the energy produced at the Temane Thermal Power Plant through the Vilankulo-Maputo line already connected to the main Substation of MOTRACO sita in the Belulunane area, as well as, in the medium term, the reception of the energy to be produced at the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Power Plant, via the link with the Tete–Maputo line and its transmission to the SAPP regional electricity market.
